shelter foundation :: Florschuetz Thomas :: Untitled (Orchidee)
Towards the end of the 1990’s, Thomas Florschuetz began devoting increasingly more attention to floral motifs. An excellent example is this orchid blossom which he donated to the Shelter Foundation. Instead of showing a frontal view of the greatly enlarged flower, he opts for the much subtler view from the side, thus enhancing the aesthetic quality of the work. At the same time, the flower as an object becomes almost secondary, what with the soft colors, complex shadows and the interplay of contours combining to create a different and much more abstract interpretation.
Thomas Florschuetz (*1957, Zwickau, Germany; living in Berlin, Germany)
Thomas Florschuetz, with his large-scale work series, is one of Germany’s most prominent photographers today. Regardless of whatever motif lies beneath the shining surfaces of his photographs, imbedded within them are always abstract picture elements. The autodidact Florschuetz has constantly developed and refined his work further. He received in 2004 the German Critics Prize for Fine Arts. Since 2007 he has been a member of the Academy of Arts in Berlin.
