Goede de Kees :: Pulse Shelter

About the work

In the lithograph “Pulse Shelter”, widely varying circular forms are grouped loosely around a cross-like central axis which, in turn, points towards a clover leaf centered in the solid black circle at the upper edge of the picture. At the right-hand border is an object suggesting a stylized bomb. The concentric rings which are so often found in Goedes’ work bring to mind the annual rings of a tree, but here these rings also exert a visual pull inward. The forms never appear to be at rest, nor does their yellow-ochre background. The impression of perpetual, flowing motion offers a dynamic contrast to the straight, stabilizing central axis.

About the artist

Kees de Goede (*1954 in Koog aan de Zaan, the Netherlands; lives in Amsterdam)
Kees de Goede’s inspirations come from observing nature and from the challenge of trying to preserve different forms of movement and energy.
This has led him to experiment with various image carriers and materials—for example, “shaped canvases” made of wooden branches or shards of shattered safety glass. In 2015, a retrospective of his work entitled Perpetual was shown at the Museum de Point in Tilburg. Renowned museums in which his work can be seen include the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven and the Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin.
